Wolfsberger AC defender Luka Lochoshvili was recently honored with the prestigious FIFA Fair Play Award at Monday’s The Best ceremony. The 23-year-old Georgian international received this special accolade for his heroic actions during an Austrian Bundesliga match in February 2022, where he saved the life of an opponent.
The incident occurred as the match between Wolfsberger AC and Austria Vienna was nearing its conclusion. Austria Vienna winger Georg Teigl lost consciousness and collapsed motionless on the pitch after a collision with Nikolas Veratschnig, a fellow opponent.
While many players on the field were either unaware or frozen in shock, Luka Lochoshvili of Wolfsberger AC immediately recognized the gravity of the situation. He quickly sprang into action, understanding that Teigl was at risk of choking.
Demonstrating incredible bravery and quick thinking, Lochoshvili reached into Teigl’s mouth and removed his tongue from his throat, preventing a potentially fatal outcome. Paramedics then rushed onto the pitch to provide further treatment to Teigl, who had suffered a skull fracture, a broken cheekbone, and a broken jaw in the collision.
Wolfsberger AC coach Robin Dutt praised Lochoshvili's actions, stating, "It was an incredible feat from Luka. In all honesty, I think that was the most important moment on the pitch." Without Lochoshvili’s swift intervention, Georg Teigl’s situation could have been far more severe.
The FIFA Fair Play Award recognizes exemplary behavior that promotes the spirit of fair play and compassion in football globally. Previous recipients include Gary Lineker, Marcelo Bielsa, and the Denmark national team and medical staff for their actions in saving Christian Eriksen’s life. Lochoshvili's act stands as a powerful testament to sportsmanship.
